Yes, it does seem a strange request! I bought the pressure cooker less than 2 months ago. There was no problem with the cooker at all.
As to what happened: I had taken the pressure valve out of the lid to soak in CLR after cooking beans, as Helen recommended after I called with a question about cooking beans. Wanted to be sure it was clean for next use.
I stored the valve loose to dry, on the upturned lid in a lower cupboard of my kitchen. It seems that our pet ferret had somehow gotten into the cupboard, spied the curiously shiny yet chewy valve and hid it somewhere in our house for safekeeping. It is in their nature to do this and I should have taken precautions. So rather than wait until we move house to find the valve, I thought I better just order another one from you.
This should go down under "Strange things customers do!"

I am glad you were amused by my rather embarrassing explanation! Feel free to publish it. I'll tell my son that his ferret, Zoe, is famous now. We're quite sure that Zoe has tucked away the "shiny yet chewy" valve in a secret location.
I am touched that you would send me the valve so promptly.

Hello Helen and Kim,
The first letter ever addressed to a ferret has been received! Zoe has thoroughly enjoyed chewing and shredding the bubble wrap. Her owner is just as pleased with the safety valve that makes her pressure cooker operational once again. Needless to say, the valve will reside in a secure drawer and Zoe's career in kitchen appliances has come to an end.
